Aussie doctors next on conscience hit list?

The conscience rights of doctors are now under assault in Australia.  The government in the Australian state of Victoria is set to pass a new bill, called the “Victoria Abortion Rform Bill”, which would require all medical personell in the state to either perform abortions or give abortion referrals.
The Archbishop of Melbourne, Denis Hart, says if the new bill passes, the Catholic church could close all of its 15 hospitals in the State.  He told the newspaper The Age that “in the worst-case scenario, if a government is determined to enforce such laws, we have no option. We might get out of hospitals altogether.”
Those 15 hospitals look after about a third of all the maternity care in the State.  Archbishop Hart, says the new regulations would require a firm response from the Church.
“Catholic hospitals cannot be part of any abortion,” he said. “That has to be respected in the community. Even providing a referral is a co-operation in evil.
“It makes a mockery of the Victorian Charter of Human Rights and the Equal Opportunity Act in that it requires health professionals with a conscientious objection to abortion to refer patients seeking an abortion to other health professionals who do not have such objections.”

Good for Archbishop Hart. I am not a catholic but I had an abortion many yearsd’ ago and still regret it as I now know that had I received sound help at the time, as girls today are given, I would not have gone ahead and I know I could have survived even though I had no income from an ex-husband and three children to bring up alone. The mentioned 15 hospitals should somehow find a way around this problem and remain open for those women who wish to continue with the pregnancy. I do not agree with abortion, but I do believe that birth control is very important and is a much better option.
