Muslim students demand “prayer room” at McGill

A group of Muslim students at McGill University in Montreal has filed a complaint with the Quebec Human Rights Commission, because they don’t have a designated “prayer space” on the university campus.
The students say they need the space as part of their religion.  McGill’s Deputy Provost for Student Life and Learning, Morton Mendelson, says religious groups are welcome to use unoccupied classrooms or set up in buildings adjacent to campus, but because it is a secular institution, the University will not provide permanent rooms for something like this.

Thank goodness…someone has the guts to stand up to these extremists…

The Deputy Provost is absolutely right. In a secular institution, religion based accommodation has no basis. You yield on this one and there will be more demands. In fact, such demands have nothing to do with religion; they are part of a soft jihad. And jihad in any form must be nipped in the bud.

  3. The way to fight this vile and insidious enemy is with ridicule and creative parody.

The campus Satanists “Open your Heart to the Dark Lord’], Jedi Practitioners and the Pure Scientologists ["Xenu is Our Lord and Savior"] must also demand special treatment. As noisily as possible. Repeatedly.

Ideally the Satanists et al. ought to out-demand the devotees of the Desert Creed.

One looks to Canadian Voodoo Practitioners for a lead; they must be fearless is insisting on the right to splatter cockerel blood wherever they choose. If thwarted, they must make as much fuss as possible, howling that their religious freedoms are being infringed.

If need be, should he prove recalcitrant or uncooperative, the Deputy Provost must be formally cursed for his unwillingness to submit each and every ludicrous demand and be burned in effigy amid bestial howls.

    Wake up Canada!

The utter ignorance and stupidity of the above comments is a testament to their advocates as it is almost unprecedented in scale:

    “extremists”

    “vile, insiduous enemy”

    “soft jihad” [!]

You people know nothing about humanity and the rights of individuals.

  5. If memory serves, when I attended McGill in the late 1980s and early 90s, there had been some Saudi money that had purchased some building either on (or immediately adjacent) to the campus. I do not know what has happened since, but it is (I believe) near the Redpath Museum. Also, when I invigilated engineering exams, some Muslims spread their prayer carpets out in the building at their chosen times at random. Wouldn’t the centre for Islamic Studies be the obvious place, if Muslims wanted to pray?

For those who would argue that McGill is thoroughly secular, I myself prayed in the Birks building regularly at the chapel that serves those who attend the Christian seminary programs there…
