Draft bill in Britain to outlaw pro-life abortion counselling

There’s a new law under consideration in England’s Parliament that could potentially make a criminal out of any British citizen who convinces a woman not to have an abortion.
A Conservative MP, John Bercow, has tabled an amendment to the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill which would subject groups advertising services to pregnant women to up to two years in prison if the information they provide changes the woman’s mind.   And apparently, it doesn’t matter if the information is scientifically accurate.
Bercow’s amendment reads that “it shall be an offence to deliberately mislead through advertising in relation to the termination of pregnancy and alternatives thereto.”
That covers what would normally be considered “false advertising.”  But then, the amendment continues by saying that “any person, association or body corporate shall be guilty of an offence” if they provide “material which… contains false information and is untruthful…  or in its overall presentation deceives or is in any way likely to deceive the average person… even if the information is factually correct“.   (Italics ours.)
And, the amendment concludes, an offence will be deemed to have been committed if the information given “causes or is likely to cause the average pregnant woman to take a decision in relation to the termination of her pregnancy she would not have taken otherwise.”
British pro-life groups say they have no problem with the prohibition on “false advertising”, but they think this particular amendment is aimed at forcing them to stop telling the truth about abortion – particularly about fetal development; and that the issue has become so politicized that rational scientific discussion about unborn babies is no longer allowed.
A Planned Parenthood website in England talks about the issue this way:  “It’s common for CPC’s (Crisis Pregnancy Centres) to use misleading films, ultrasound pictures, and written materials to scare and emotionally manipulate women into continuing their pregnancies. By presenting women with false information about abortion and the development of the fetus, CPCs threaten women’s abilities to make informed choices.”
Pro-life spokesman John Smeaton told LifeSite News that it’s “ironic to see pro-life organisations being accused of inaccuracy by an organisation which claims on its website that the unborn child does not become a baby until birth.”
