Update on MPs opposing Morgentaler’s Order of Canada

Conservative MP Bev Shipley (Lambton-Kent-Middlesex, ON) put out a statement today strongly condemning the decision to give Henry Morgentaler the Order of Canada.

I was also told that Conservative MP Brad Trost (Saskatoon-Humboldt, SK) was on one of his local radio stations expressing his opposition to the decision, and urging his constituents to make their views known to the Governor-General’s office.

And Conservative MP Jeff Watson (Essex, ON) was quoted in the Windsor Star condemning the move. According to the Star: “Watson issued a news release Tuesday condemning the award, calling it a decision that ‘dishonours both our nation and the Order of Canada.’ He urged Essex residents and “all Canadians” to call [Gov. Gen. Michaelle] Jean’s office and register their disapproval.”

Prime Minister Stephen Harper himself was cited (in the Edmonton Sun and the Ottawa Sun) expressing disappointment over the decision: “It’s not a decision of the Government of Canada. These decisions are made independently of government. That said, I guess my preference, to be frank, would be to see the Order of Canada be something that really unifies – that brings Canadians together.”
