The ECP Centre held another very exciting and successful fundraising dinner in Burlington, Ontario on May 22.
This was a great event…Herman Faber clearly set forth the legal challenges…and Tristan Emmanuel sounded the clarion call for action. ‘When the foundations are being destroyed, what can the righteous do?’ Plenty! May the Lord bless this enterprise! – Prof. Cornelis Van Dam
The theme of the fundraiser was, “When Christians are free, everybody wins.” And those of you who have been with the ECP Centre know how central that theme is to our work. Freedom of religion and freedom of speech are fundamental to true democracy. And even more fundamental is the necessity of Christians to preserve and promote these freedoms for the next generation. The evening began with an address from Dr. Michael Wagner, author of the new must-read book on Canada’s Christian history, “Standing on Guard for Thee.” He challenged the mythology that conservatism in Canada is the product of American influence and instead showed that the opposite is actually the case. ”Who were the leaders and promoters of the Sexual Revolution? People like Margaret Mead, Alfred Kinsey, Hugh Hefner, to name only a few. It may seem strange to some, but there isn’t a Canadian among the lot,” he said. Herman Faber, the ECP Centre’s legal advisor, talked about the legal advocacy work of the Centre. “Nowhere is the effort to marginalize and muzzle Christian influence in Canada’s public square more evident than by actions and recent rulings of Canada’s human rights commissions.”

Mr. Faber outlined how the recent action by the Ontario Human Rights Commission against Christian Horizons has had a chilling effect on the freedoms of Canadians. “This is why,” said Faber “the Centre has worked so hard to support Christians in this fight for freedom.” Faber reminded the audience that the moral and financial support given to Scott Brockie, Chris Kempling and Stephen Boissoin arose because their individual cases were a direct assault on everyone’s’ freedoms. Faber then announced the new cases that the Centre is supporting this year: Ron Gray and the Christian Heritage Party and Hamilton Right to Life. “Just as in the case of Mr. Brockie,” said Faber ”both the CHP’s and the Hamilton Right to Life’s human rights complaint underscore that we must always be vigilant to defend the freedoms of religion and speech in Canada.”

Thanks for all the hard work in putting on a great event. I thought it was well organized. The food was spectacular. The music was great. The speeches were both informative and inspiring. The pace was perfect and all around I just thought it was very professional and reflected very well on the organization. I also appreciated the clearly articulated vision, strategy and progress report. – Jason
ECP Centre President, Tristan Emmanuel wrapped up the dinner with a speech on vision. “The people perish for lack of vision.” Emmanuel made the point that as important as the marriage rallies back in 2005 were the problem was it made us look defensive and reactionary. ”Our problem, in part, is a public relations problem…we look like all we ever do is react to the politics of others and rarely do we look like we are advancing anything positive in Canada’s public square.” Emmanuel emphasized that the impression that conservatives are always “against” someone has more to do with our lack of political vision then our actual disposition. “Of all people, Christians understand the importance of compassion and love even in areas like politics and the social sciences.” Emmanuel talked about the Centre’s determination to change that public relations image. “To start with the Centre is now working on three complementary projects designed to equip Christians to engage the public square for the promotion of freedom, rather than to wait for someone else to define the issues of the day. First, is our new alternative media solution called No Apologies. ”We envision a day,” said Emmanuel, ”when Canada’s conservative community will get an unbiased news perspective 24/7. Second, is a series of market place training seminars designed to teach Christians how to effectively interact and promote the values of freedom and faith in the public square. And third, the legal defence initiative. “One of the priorities of the Centre remains the public and legal advocacy of fellow Christians who find themselves the objects of a human rights inquisition,” said Emmanuel. “We’re going to be there…to stand with fellow believers…to stand with them for freedom’s sake,” he said.
The mission is to defend the freedom of faith in Canada. The vision is to proactively advance real freedom for all.
The evening was an affirmation of freedom – the freedom to believe and the freedom to reflect one’s belief publicly; it was a promotion of freedoms very dear to the hearts of Canadians – freedom of speech and freedom of religion. I have heard from many about the positive tone. Keep it up! - Rob
The goal of the dinner was to raise $25,000 and we are happy to report that we exceed that expectation to a grand total of $27,000. This money will be used to support both the CHP and the Hamilton Right to Life group, as well as pay for two important resource personnel over the summer – Dr. Michael Wagner our head researcher and Mr. Doug Schouten who will be our Director of Western Development and Events Coordination.
Many hard-working and sacrificial people made the dinner possible. If you did not have the opportunity to attend the dinner, but you would like to also support our important work to advance Christian truth in Canada’s public square, then please send your donation to P.O. Box 112, Jordan Station, Ontario, L0R 1S0 or you can make a payment online below.
Please accept our grateful thanks for your contribution.
