Ontario residents protest loss of area’s non-bilingual postmistress
Canwest News Service
Residents of Pakenham, Ont., near Ottawa, who are losing their postmistress next month because she does not speak French, have started a petition to protest the change. Canada Post says front-counter staff have to be bilingual everywhere in the National Capital Region. A spokeswoman for the postal agency confirmed a bilingual postmaster has been hired to replace Jeanne Barr, who has worked in the Pakenham post office for seven years. Canada Post is constantly monitoring its “linguistic compliance,” Martine Lepine said. “[Ms. Barr] is protected under the collective agreement and will still get a job with us. There is nobody being dismissed,” she said. Ms. Barr said it was news to her that Canada Post was promising her a job of some sort.
