URGENT PRAYER AND ACTION ALERT FOR C-268 THIS MONDAY
Joy Smith, MP, introduced a bill called Mandatory Minimums for Trafficking Minors to Parliament. It would change the Criminal Code to create a mandatory minimum sentence of five years for anyone who trafficks a person under 18 in the sex trade, and six years if the trafficking involved kidnapping. It passed through the House of Commons on September 30th and went to the Senate, where it now has to pass through Committee and vote before becoming law.
SENSE OF URGENCY: Right now C-268 is stalled in the Senate. In order for mandatory minimums for child traffickers to become law before the 2010 Olympic games, it needs to be debated in the Human Rights Committee within the next week so that it can be reported on before Christmas break. If it makes it through the Human Rights Committee before Christmas break it can be voted on first thing in January and make it to law by the Olympics. Senator Anne Cools has called an adjournment on the bill (essentially she hit the “pause” button on the bill), which means that it cannot move forward until she makes a statement about it.
WHY BEFORE THE OLYMPICS? After the Athens Olympics, the Greek Minister of Public Safety reported that human trafficking cases doubled during the games, and the British government is already putting plans into place to prevent human trafficking at the 2012 London Olympics. Three weeks is not a lot of time to put a law into place that would bring Canada’s child trafficking laws up to par with Thailand’s (currently, Canada does not have a minimum sentence. Convicted traffickers are getting sentences of 2 years and serving less than one. Thailand already has a minimum sentence of five years for trafficking girls under 18). PRAY TO END HUMAN TRAFFICKING: This Monday please set aside time to pray and fast for C-268 and the issue of child trafficking in Canada. If Senator Cools speaks on the bill early this week it can still go through Committee before Christmas break and be on track to pass before the Olympics. Please pray that Senator Cools speaks in favour of the bill within the next few days and that C-268 would have massive favour in the Senate. Please also pray for the Human Rights Committee in the Senate, that they would debate and report on the bill quickly without amendments.
ACTION POINTS:
- FAST AND PRAY: If you feel led to fast for the next three weeks for the issue of child trafficking in Canada, please email us at fast@4mycanada.ca to let us know. You can fast one day a week, do a 21 day Daniel fast, or fast as you feel led to (check with your doctor first). Pray that C-268 would find favour in the Senate and that a sense of urgency would be put on the bill to pass it without amendments before the Olympic games. Pray for the 2010 Olympic games; for the police force in Vancouver and for the rescue and protection of children that are being sexually exploited or could be trafficked in the coming months.
- BE A VOICE: Write a letter expressing the need to pass C-268 without amendments before the Olympic games and send it to Senator Ann Cools and the Human Rights Committee in the Senate:
