BC HRC victim Chris Kempling corrects the record

as Ontario woman smears him with anti-homosexual falsehood.

Letter: Teacher sets record straight on comments
By Chris Kempling, Kamloops, B.C.

In her letter to the editor, published on Nov. 14, Allison Mackay alleges I informed gay students that as their teacher and counsellor, I considered them “perverted” and “immoral.” I did no such thing. In a letter to the editor of the Quesnel Cariboo Observer, in 1997, I made a statement that “most religions consider homosexuality to be immoral,” which is objectively true and merely a statement of fact. That is far different than making personally demeaning statements, as Mackay alleges.

Furthermore, I never referred to homosexual students or persons as “perverted.” Actually, I received a letter of commendation from my principal for my sensitive handling of a case of a transgendered student.

My letters to the editor were not considered inappropriate by my school board superiors at the time, and I did not receive so much as a verbal reprimand. I have never received a complaint about my counselling services from any student, parent, or homosexual person in all my time as a teacher in Quesnel. I did, however, have 14 letters of commendation. It was only three years later, when someone (a person with an adult gay son with no connection to the school system) addressed a concern to the B.C. College of Teachers that discipline was imposed.

Had I written aspersions toward my students, as Mackay alleges, I would have been suspended on the spot, and rightly so.

The comments made by Mackay are way out of line. Help me set the record straight.
