Rights given by God, not the state

More than a hundred people gathered at a church  hall in Langley, BC last weekend for two days of spirited discussion and defence of the notion of free speech, from a Christian perspective.
ECP Centre President Tristan Emmanuel kicked off the event by decrying the way the Canadian government has been trying to insert itself into various discussions about religion and morality in the country.  “While we may not always agree with everyone’s religious ideology, let us be very clear that when civil government begins to determine what you and I can and cannot say, it is taking upon itself a role that God Almighty has never given to the State.”  Emmanuel continued that thought, adding that “Too many Christians think that rights are commodities that you can just exchange, or that are unnecessary.  I’m talking about inalienable rights. Our right to freely assemble.  The right of the press to report.  The right for us to worship God.  The right for us to speak our conscience openly and in public.  The right to practice what we believe, and to bequeath that to our children.  These are rights that God the Creator gives to us.  Not our governments.”
We’ll have more snippets of speeches from the conference throughout the rest of the week.
