Obama pledges support for “hate crime” law

Barack Obama raised more than a quarter of a million dollars with a big fundraising event in New York City last week.  The money came from an event targeting the gay and transgendered community.  Admission to the fundraiser was $2,300.00.  And about 125 people showed up.
One of the people at the event says they heard a very clear promise from Obama to push for hate crimes legislation to protect people from discrimination based on sexual orientation or identity. He also promised a repeal of the ban on openly gay people serving in the US Military.
Obama apparently stopped short, in a half-hour speech, of endorsing gay marriage, saying he was in favour of civil unions rather than granting full “marriage” rights to homosexuals.
