40 Days for Life: The Making of a Pro-Life Renaissance

By Suzanne Fortin

Where was I last Sunday at 5 am?

Praying at the abortion clinic, downtown. I was taking part in the 40 Days for Life vigil, an event during which pro-life activists pray for an end to abortion around the clock in front of the local abortion clinic.

I couldn’t sleep that night. So I decided to make good use of my insomnia. With “40 Days”, there are no more excuses to miss out. When it’s time for other pro-life events, there’s always something else crowding it out – work, kids, vacation, weather. This is an event that can accommodate anyone on any schedule – if they are willing to make the time.

Some youth from Catholic Christian Outreach were already there when I arrived at 4:45 am. It was their turn to do the “night shift.” We were five people in all, praying at an abortion clinic in the wee hours of the morning. Pretty amazing, when you think about it.

I walked back and forth, holding my sign and praying. There weren’t that many people around to see me, but to anyone who did pass by, I stood out. It was mostly quiet, except for the occasional drunk person. I thought all the creepy crawlies would have gone to bed by now, but I was sadly mistaken. I was accosted by an impertinent young man trying to jerk me around. But I accepted the abuse, just as Christ did. Then, I became more resolute for having suffered in the fight.

This event is not a true protest. It’s not about chanting slogans or making a political statement. My presence there, virtually alone, was an act of faith. I called on the Holy Spirit to chase away the evil spirits in that place. I could have done it from home. Just like God could have saved us from Heaven without being born to a woman. But God’s power is manifested more directly and more concretely when he reveals himself. Jesus confronted evil spirits in person; as the Body of Christ, so should we.

During the day, there are thousands of people who pass by our prayer site. When they see us, they see a living billboard to the truth: that abortion takes a human life, and that unborn children are worthy of protection. It’s not aggressive. It’s not in your face. But we are noticed because of our constant presence. Our determination and message cannot fail to stir the minds of some pedestrians.

40 Days for Life Ottawa also has its designated and specially trained sidewalk counsellors. On “clinic days” – when the babies are killed – the counselors try to reach the women before they enter the building that houses the abortuary. It’s been a challenge since pro-aborts have organized their counter-effort. They escort the abortion-minded women to the entrance in order to avoid the counselors. It makes it that much harder to reach the women. The solution is not just more clever tactics, but more prayer and sacrifice. The Holy Spirit is able to thwart anyone who opposes him.

The small, but real, victories prove this. There were two “turnarounds” in Toronto during this event (i.e., mothers changed their minds), and one in Fredericton. In Halifax, a woman working in the abortion ward at the Victoria General Hospital asked to be transferred. Then, there are probably other turnarounds and conversions that we don’t know about.

It is my fondest wish that every city and every town in Canada with an abortion facility would host “40 Days for Life;” not only because it is spiritual leaven for our country, but it is political leaven for our movement.

The first thing it does is send the message to ourselves and to everyone else that we are serious about ending abortion in this country. We know it’s a spiritual battle first and foremost, but the hardening of our resolve has worldly consequences.

Our enthusiasm attracts new pro-lifers and gets them active. It stokes the old-timers who may have become discouraged and dropped out. It energizes the faithful for the next battle, and spurs them on to do something after the 40 Days is over. It creates connections and fosters a sense of solidarity.

Some communities don’t have the numbers to schedule people around the clock. They can operate on a reduced schedule (the minimum being 12 hours a day). Smaller groups might also consider renting buses or vans to visit 40 Days sites in larger centres.

If this were done all over Canada, we could have the makings of a pro-life renaissance in this country and realistically envision the passage of fetal rights legislation. So far, Toronto, Ottawa, Kitchener, Halifax, Fredericton, Winnipeg and Montreal are taking part. Isn’t it time your city joined in?

  1. Thank you to all of you who are so committed to standing up for the unborn
    physically outside the abortiuary.

I am one of those that is intimidated by the weather, work, etc. I must admit though that I am old. In my younger years I could withstand the elements

Thank you, again, for being brave, generous, supportive in the cause for the unborn.

    Yes indeed, great stuff!
Here’s another amazing (heart and gut-wrenching) story about an abortionist turnaround. Praise God! he works in mysterious ways.
