Stelmach Government Remains Committed to Parental Rights Clause in New Citizenship and Multiculturalism Bill

The Alberta government remains committed to a parental rights clause in the introduction of Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach’s new Human Rights, Citizenship and Multiculturalism Amendment Act (Bill 44) noted Alberta Culture and Community Spirit Minister Lindsay Blackett. The new legislation, while enshrining homosexuality into Alberta’s human rights code, also grants power to parents and legal guardians to pull children from classes when subject matter deals explicitly with religion, sexuality or sexual orientation. Introduced two weeks ago, critics are calling for the removal of the parental rights clause. Blackett, however, says the clause will remain, noting: “We’re not able to retract (the clause), nor is there a lot of will to do that.” Stelmach reaffirmed his commitment to the bill in its entirety and noted he was confident Albertans would not misuse the clause. “I feel very confident in the act and entrenching the rights of parents. I have tremendous trust in Albertans.” Parental rights remains a strong priority for pro-faith groups and social conservatives right across the country.

I agree with the opposition that putting this in human rights code potentially opens up a legal mess and will undermine the workings of the classroom and it should stay a school act issue and NOT a human rights one.
