Alberta Liberals Attack Parental Rights in New Stelmach Bill, Call for Special Protections for Teachers

The Alberta opposition Liberal Party, addressing the Stelmach government’s introduction of the Human Rights, Citizenship and Multiculturalism Amendment Act (Bill 44), is attacking parental rights protections in the bill, demanding the provincial government foot legal expenses if educators across the province are subjected to human rights complaints for teaching controversial subjects in the classroom. Led by Edmonton-Centre MLA Laurie Blakeman, the Liberal charge against Bill 44 is being directed at Minister of Culture and Community Spirit (Calgary-North West MLA) Lindsay Blackett. Blackett is dismissing the criticism, arguing the majority of conflicts over curriculum in the classroom (including issues regarding evolution, sexuality and sexual orientation) are able to be resolved at the school level. What is interesting about the Liberal criticism of the parental rights clause in the new bill and demands for legal coverage is that the party is completely unwilling to call for government protections of private citizens (including Alberta pastor Stephen Boissoin) in their battle with the province’s human rights commission.
