HIV Documentary Attacking Marriage and Family to be Screened in Parliament

A direct attack on marriage and the family, outspoken pro-choice advocacy group Action Canada for Population and Development is planning to screen a controversial documentary linking traditional views of gender and faith-based values to HIV infection, Tuesday, April 29 on Parliament Hill. The documentary, ‘The Silent Partner: HIV in Marriage’, set in sub-Saharan Africa, claims married women are especially at risk to HIV, arguing traditional HIV prevention strategies are ineffective and “do not meet the needs of married women who cannot practice abstinence, cannot control the faithfulness of their husbands and find it difficult to (practice) condom use.” Directed to MP’s, Senators and Parliamentary staff, both the film’s producer, Rosemarie Muganda-Onyando, Director of the Centre for the Study of Adolescence in Nairobi (Kenya) and activist Kennedy Odhiambo Otina, Coordinator for the African Women’s Development and Communication Network-affiliated ‘Men for Gender Equality Now’ will be present at the screening. The politicized documentary ignores indisputable evidence on the ground suggesting faith-based strategies (including abstinence and monogamy) continue to be the most effective way to fight new HIV infections. Employing Africa’s HIV crisis as a thin veneer, the film, at its heart, remains nothing more than a blatant campaign of Western colonialism promoting reproductive rights (read abortion) and anti-faith policies meant to destroy traditional African cultural and pro-faith family values. The hope is that Canada’s Parliamentarians will see the documentary for what it is – an attack against faith and the sanctify of life.
