Newfoundland and Québec Bishops to Investigate Possible Support of Pro-Choice Relief Agencies

As pro-life groups across the country continue to push the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace on possible support of pro-choice relief agencies operating in Latin America, the Western Catholic Reporter reports this week the appointment of two key bishops who will spearhead an inquiry into the growing allegations. The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops has appointed the Most Rev. Martin Currie, the Archbishop of St. John’s, Newfoundland and the Most Rev. François Lapierre, Bishop of Saint-Hyacinthe, Québec to head the inquiry, which will include a special team that will meet with Latin American Church officials and local Catholic relief and development officials to determine the stance of various recipients on the ground. The Canadian Conference sent out a letter to parishes last month stressing its commitment to life from conception to natural death and concern that all funds collected go to organizations that reflect the Church’s teaching on sanctity of life issues.
